Indie69 Best of 2010 Finally available

January 26, 2011 5 comments

Indie 69 Best of 2010 sucky cover artYep, it finally actually happened. After a long, long struggle. Or rather various struggles including massive computer and data loss. I have never, ever lost so much in such a short period of time. But that’s over for the most part. On top of it all I suffered what must have been a cross between the swine flu and ebola, which I am (mostly) over now. I pulled myself out of what can best be described as a stupor and got this thing done. Excuses and complaints are now over.

All that said and done, it was a great year again for music. This is a list not of what was successful or popular, but what “stuck out” for me as a listener. What never left my mp3 players. Or my head. All year. Old favorites released new music and a few new surprises and new favorites emerged.  I hope you get as much out of these selections as I did.

You can find the playlist at all the usual places and HERE.

Enjoy! And watch for the January, 2011 playlist late and .. well.. when it comes out.

You can find all my thanks and further notes in the playlist’s NFO file, which you can read with notepad or any plain text editor.

Please note that although I think this month’s cover is “sucky”, the original photo is very much not sucky. I’m just getting the hang of using gimpshop instead of photoshop.  On a related note, this is the first month I have used ALL open source tools to create the playlist. (exceptions: operating system and utorrent for seeding) Soon I hope to have no exceptions.

Indie 69 Oct 2010 Playlist Released (again… finally)

October 23, 2010 3 comments

sryAs the cover art says… sry. I really thought I’d have it ready a few days ago. Nope. But all is well now and I’ll have (hopefully) Nov on time as well as the best of 2010 coming right up. Hard to believe 2010 is almost over. Time to make a point of getting sunshine.

I decided to just take a little time off, I guess.

This month’s playlist is my largest ever. Again to make up for the lost time, it’s been embiggened.

U can grab it HERE (and in all the usual places) By the time you read this it should be seeded.

I think you’ll find a lot to love in there, too. Dog in deep for some real surprises. The musical landscape is so spread out right now. Sort of a sprawl. Genres are named, introduced, dominated and hated on in a matter of minutes now. But all this is good. Good for us. Because out of all the artists out there trying to sound like the latest thing, one or two will emerge with their own voices rising above the din of crap, giving us something amazing to listen to.

I’ll give you an example. Let’s create a genre. ElectroRetro-Buzz-Gaze*.

Now love it. Now hate it. Okay, it’s finished. ElectroRetro-Buzz-Gaze* is dead. I’ve declared it. That was easy. And somehow I feel like there’s around four or five people I’m better than now. Weird. They are so out of touch.

As fun as all this is, it’s easy to forget that there’s always been crap and the good stuff does float to the top. And I don’t mean the charts. I mean in our memories.

And then it’s nostalgia and must be destroyed. I guess there’s no winning, is there?

Have a fantastic month (what’s left of it anyway)and I look forward to seeing you for a (late) roundup in a few days. Most of you have found what’s out there already this month, but I’m going to go for it anyway. Mostly because I have not downloaded ANY of the other playlists this month, which is rare. Might as well let you know what I found.

From my basement to yours….

*Before this was published, Pitchfork discovered the genre and Paste declared it dead.

Indie and New Music Playlist Round-Up – September 2010

September 14, 2010 3 comments

I figure… as long as I get this done before the 15th, it’s not late. So, depending on when you see this, it is or is not “late”. Either way, I’ve had a chance to listen to a couple of these and it IS a good month. Just wish I had time to grab them all. Looks like Criznittle is sitting September out. We miss ya. Remember, when I find new playlists, I add them to the list for the month. So check back here often for updates. Here’s the rest….

Refreshing. I know it says August, but it really came out in Sept. So have at it all HERE.

Jimdo's Indie Rock Music September 2010 cover artJimdo’s playlists are always great and this is no exception. You know, this is really dull sometimes, having nothing negative to say. The truth is, I just love all the lists and get a gigantic kick out of hearing SO MUCH new music all the time. And it would be hard for one of these playlists to go terribly wrong. But I SWEAR.. this one. … this Jimdo’s playlist is special. Yes, if you download all of them, you will get some repeats. But that’s not exactly hard to fix. It’s worth it. Grabster HERE.

SAG's Indie Electro Rock Playlist September 2010 cover art. Here we have a stated and very real difference. There’s a lot more bleep-bloop here. That’s not a bad thing. And there are some GREAT bleepin’ bloopin’ tracks out this month. Don’t let anyone tell you that this music cannot “rock”. Oh it can. And will. Bleep it bleepin’ HERE (link to multiupload on indierockplaylists.com). Really needs to be a torrent of this every month.

Indie 69 September 2010 Cover art.Alright. What’s the deal with the name? There have been over 100 tracks for 2 months running now. So it’s not that there are 69 tracks. Is this guy some kind of perv or something? I mean, WTF!? Is that some kind of a joke? SixtyNine! Oooh, how original. I bet he thought that’d get some attention, huh? Jeeze. And then with the cover art? What is that? A Doctor Who font? Nerrrrrrrrd!!!! lol. I cannot believe this guy still thinks anyone cares what he thinks is good on a given month in music. But he just keeeeeps doing it. Over and OVER and OVER. I guess if you like that sort of thing it’s worth grabbing this month. I guess it’s good for…. completists? That’s about it, really. Stop encouraging him. If you MUST.. grab it HERE.

That’s it for this month. I hope this list comes in handy for everyone. Also, there’s a new site out there you may have seen mentioned in the comments called IndieRockPlaylists.com . It’s well maintained, easy on the eyes and the person doing it is pretty darned cool. So check it out. You may find it a more convenient place to grab everything. And there are tons of artist links on the lists. Nice touch. But.. umm.. come back here anyway! lol. See you next month and in the blog. I promised higher volume of posts and I am delivering. So check back often.

Indie 69 Sept 2010 Playlist Released (finally!!)

September 12, 2010 2 comments

Indie 69 September 2010 Cover ArtFINALLY!! It’s actually here. 113 tracks this time. Why? Well, because I can and because I was just running out of time and that’s what was left today out of an original 300 or so tracks to choose from. Apologies in advance for any dupes from last month. While I was able to take the time to review each track, I could have easily not recognized a few from last month as I have just not had the time to listen to everything multiple times in the last 30 days or so.

I don’t really have a good excuse I can share at the moment, so I’ll just sincerely ask for your forgiveness for being so late this month. Will NOT happen again unless I’m dead or enslaved. Luckily, the music here is great! Lots of stuff I have never heard or heard of before. Not as many familiar faces. More dancy, techy, bleepy bloopy stuff this month. Or at least that’s my perception.  It feels like a mid-summer, right in the heat of it, mix. Instead of a LATE summer mix. And mixed in there is a lot of new Americana-flavored bits as well as some truly odd tracks. A couple of instrumentals, some dreamy, echo-laden reverbsturbation and a modicum of guitars.

You can grab the playlist  HERE!! AND at all the usual places it pops up. (Yes, I have heard the calls for megaupload, rapidshare, etc etc. I will get to that soon, but in the meantime if anyone else wants to do it and e-mail the link or post in comments, please.. please DO.)

The submissions of music are coming in at a little faster rate, which is nice. But I need MORE. Use the dropbox or the preferred method of e-mailing one to two tracks at a time at

indiesixtynine@gmail.com (not a link)

and I will give ALL tracks an honest listen. Even if I don’t dig it and think someone out there will, I will include it on the playlist. That’s just how these muffins bake, baby.

The monthly Playlist Round-Up is coming within the next couple of days, and those promised more frequent updates are in the works as of today. So watch for that, too. I just watched a video this morning of a live performance that almost brought me to tears. It helps that I’m a gigantic fan of this band, but I honestly think anyone that lets the video and audio just wash over them and give it a real listen (especially on headphones) will have a similar experience/reaction. So good it nearly hurt me inside. It made me ache a bit, honestly. Can’t wait to share it. Later today. And I just found out one of my favorite new bands is from my town! Trippy. So maybe I can get an on-person or at the very least catch a live show. More on all that later. If you like me, there will be more of me. If you don’t? Just grab the playlists and ignore all this other crap.

That’s about it for me. Enjoy the belated September gift of new music and I’ll see you around here I hope.

Indie and New Music Playlist Round-Up for August 2010

August 17, 2010 15 comments

I decided to put this one together a little earlier this time. Apologies for the premature posting(this was posted accidentally a few days ago before it was finished.. a case of a mistake in scheduling). It’s never happened to me before, I swear. It’s just that.. well.. we just met and you’re so beautiful and I just… couldn’t control myself. I swear, next time it will be different. wait… what??

Last month it was FAR too late. Be sure to come back and check this post from time to time as I will edit it to add any new playlists I’ve come across. Please leave any suggestions for anything I’ve missed or messed up in the comments. And remember, if you’re interested in making your own.. just do it! And then let me know where it can be found. I’m sure your tastes are better than mine at least. Prove it!! 🙂

As always we will start off with the original, the one and only..

DAMN! No Criznittle playlist this month. Someone mentioned he was taking a couple (few?) months off for some reason. But I cannot find a post mentioning it or mentioning why. So I guess we’ll be losing the great one again for a little bit. But at least we know he’ll be back!

.

Blalock's Indie Rock Playlist August 2010 Blalock’s Indie Rock Playlist – August 2010 – A great one for August. And I like now that on his site you can vote on tracks and there’s a top 10 for the month. Nice!

Sadly, I am also not seeing an August, 2010 SAG Indie Electro Rock Playlist. I checked last.fm and found no evidence as to why. If I find out what’s up I’ll update this post with more info.

Navigator's Fresh Indie Playlist August 2010 Navigator’s Fresh Indie Playlist – August 2010 – Just came out yesterday, so it’s not quite seeded yet. Matter of fact, as of writing this there were no seeds at 100%. (all are at 45.8 percent at the moment) That may change in the next few hours, so this might be one you just want to let sit and wait for it to complete. It could be a while before the uploader notices that he or she isn’t actually seeding for whatever reason. (uh-oh… ISO Hunt lists it as being “censored” by a US court) Hrm. Looks like someone in the industry is learning to stab itself in the back. We’ll see how this plays out. More than one site is citing a takedown notice as the reason for the torrent not being available anymore. If anyone out there has it from a rapidshare download or any other source.. you could, if you wanted to do such a thing and violate the takedown order… seed it. But I wouldn’t want to encourage that sort of thing of course. This is new. Could it be that this playlist seems to have featured quite a few more mainstream or major label tracks than usual? Disturbing. I guess the big boys want to “control the message” so to speak. They screwed up radio and now they want to screw up everything else so that the ONLY dominant culture is tied into all their other Disneyfied properties and competitive reality TV crap. GFY. (UPDATE:Now seeded well, but still no idea why there was a takedown on some sites)

The Sonic Impetus

The Sonic Impetus – The Throwback Album – A one-shot playlist suggested by xy2610. A great little collection of tracks that are new, but inspire the sense of being in the past. A nice theme, good song choices and good writing on the blog itself.  I hope we see more from this person.

The Sonic Impetus playlist, August 2010The Sonic Impetus – August 2010 – The creator of the above also does a short but sweet monthly playlist, as it turns out. August does indeed suck ass. I noticed nothing new from the 2 new ones I found in July. Hope they come back. And no evidence (so far) of other new ones this month. If they do, or any of the others do, I will update this page. So check back from time to time or follow me on Twitter (@indie69) and I’ll send out a notice when it’s updated. This was a bit of a light month for playlists, huh? Hopefully it will improve over the course of the month.

Considering how few playlist releases there were this month, I may consider doing another double if I can dedicate the time at the end of the month (and in-between). If this sounds like a BAD idea, let me know. Most of the feedback so far is positive. Also, does anyone else see the blue sky theme in this month’s covers? Unintentional, of course. Strange and beautiful.

Indie 69 New Music Playlist for August 2010 Released (bonus month)

Indie 69 August 2010 Cover Art

Indie 69 August 2010 Cover Art

Well, as July sped to a close, I found that instead of having to scrape for the last few tracks for the next month, I had FAR too many tracks good enough to be included.  The last time I did a double-sized playlist was on my one year anniversary back in Feb. But since I make the rules, I decided to just go for it and do another one. So maybe twice a year. Not every month is like this last month has been though. There are some GREAT tracks here. Something for everyone. 138 tracks! It’s also a great way to celebrate my increased bandwidth.

Not much else to say of any significance. August marks the beginning of the end of summer, and that just blows my mind. It’s as if this summer never even happened for me. The summer that never happened. I hope that’s not the case for everyone and you all had perfect summers filled with new love, sunshine and experience. I’m sure brevity was the last thing anyone expected of me after those last few posts, but I cannot think of anything else to say except that it’s a great month for music again.

You can grab the playlist at all the usual haunts and HERE.

Please seed even though you first few downloaders will be getting it much faster than you’re used to. The seeds dropped off last month in spite of the downloads going on and on and on. Strange. It’s very important to seed!

Thanks for downloading and I’ll see you for the next one in Sept. And keep the drop box submissions coming. If you prefer e-mail, drop me a file and a message at indiesixtynine@gmail.com .

New Filligar Tracks – New Album (mp3 downloads)

July 7, 2010 2 comments

Filligar - The Nerve album cover

Filligar - The Nerve - album art

I just received word from Filligar that the new album is indeed on iTunes and that I can finally share a couple of tracks from it with you. It’s called The Nerve.  And I have to agree. The nerve of them to make such a huge leap forward, creating their best recordings yet. I’ve had this album since last month and it’s been KILLING me not to talk about it and share tracks. KILLING me. I provide now, with permission, two fantastic tracks from the album. The single is out there and can be had on their site. It’s a great track as well. But I’d like you to hear my two favorites….

Filligar-Not Gonna Settle (right click save)

What an anthem. You may want to wave your fists in the air while you sing along, walking steadfastly away from that non-ringing phone to head out for a night on the town. The serial monogamist or  pushover-no-more’s anthem. In real life or on TV.

Filligar-Health (right click save)

What can I say that hasn’t already been sai… oh wait. I may be the first. I’d better make it good. I’ll put it in quotes for you so you don’t have to bother.

I have seen the future of rock and roll, and it’s name is …

Been done already hasn’t it? I’ll try again.

If you see one movie this summer, make it Filligar’s new song HEALTH. You will not be sorry.

Woops.

Last try….

“THIS SONG IS FU(K!NG GREAT!”

That’s about right.

I love their other material, but this new album is much, much better. It’s rich, diverse and full music (to a greater extent). It defies previous labels loosely applied to their music such as… essentially…  “surprisingly good for a dead genre”. Well, tell you what. Some of us don’t read Paste. We just glance at it and chuckle a little under our breath. If this is a dead genre, then the genre being spoken of is music itself. This is pure, rock music.

While so many artists are paying less attention to getting nice, big, full sounds and instead attempting to mimic various kinds of low fidelity or dead formats, Filligar went for the hi-fi sound here and it works for them.  Not that there are not real gems in the lo-fi music out there right now. This album just sounds so beautiful and sunny. A nice change. That’s all.  A Perfect soundtrack for your summer exploits. And I feel it’s necessary to point out that the keys on this album feel organic, full and out front for once. The organs, the electric piano. Nice. That can be hard to pull off without sounding wimpy or thin. And they never once sound wimpy or thin. I cannot wait to hear what this will sound like live.

Pick it up at iTunes right this second. And if you can find it anywhere else, grab it there. The physical CD comes out today. It’s so worth it. Buy it immediately. Show them your love.

They will be touring until the end of September, so catch them live if you can and check Filligar.com for tour dates.

Indie 69 July 2010 New Music Playlist Released.

Indie 69 July 2010 Cover Art

Indie 69 July 2010 Cover Art

Wow. So that was a pain in the ass. I go to upload this evening and once again… I get the

MUSIAYLIST BUG at TPB.

It seems it’s IMPOSSIBLE to upload anything with “New Music Playlist” at the end of the upload name, no matter how you separate it, no matter that it’s not over the character limit. Nothing fixes it except placing it at the beginning of the name. *

So this month, the Indie 69 2010 New Music Playlist is called….

NewMusicPlaylist Indie 69 2010

Combine that with a captcha system that is itself WRONG 75% of the time, cover art that despite being the exact size TPB requires to be included in a torrent description is rejected over and over. Even when you use their own re-sizing tool. A description field that won’t let me include links to cover art credit where it’s due. A tracker that rejects torrents being re-upped once they’ve been deleted because of a torrent name bug they refuse to fix, without adding new files so the tracker thinks it’s a different torrent. And you have the ULTIMATE testing of one’s patience and tolerance. Now, don’t get me wrong. I LOVE The Bay. Endlessly. But how many hoops do I have to jump through to SHARE, exactly? Well, it turns out, quite a fucking few. It’s a free service, one that has served the world like no other service ever has. And I temper my frustrations with a modicum of respect and admiration. But it’s still FRUSTRATING. And I’ll be damned if I’m not going to mention it. A lot of people would just quit. So instead of being selfish about it, I’m just going to vent here a little instead. Mm-kay? Good. Now I’m done with that.

THAT is not the reason for the playlist being late again. There are a hundred personal reasons for that. And I won’t bore you with any of it. But I’ve been keeping very busy lately, making people I care about think I don’t care about them. Letting things slide when I never would have before. And just generally being grumpy about it all while trying to smile as some people around me look oddly puzzled about it all simply because they’re not around to see what I do all day. When that’s the reason why I have to do it. Others are not doing those things, so someone has to. That someone is me right now. Then they check my blog and say “hey, didn’t he say he was asleep?” and “Oh… I see he has time to BLOG”. But the reality is I schedule all my posts now and when I do these things like blogging, answering e-mail, putting together playlists, I do it all at the loss of my own time. And yes, sometimes that time is for sleep. But if I know you personally, and you see something like a Twitter notification or a blog post from me… that does NOT mean I’m awake. Just want to make that clear. And please do not superimpose your own anger over my words. I’m not even remotely angry. I don’t have the energy to be angry. I cannot think of a single person I’m mad at. Period.

This month’s playlist, as long as it took to finally come together, is one of my favorites. In spite of the fact that there’s a ton of what some call “Chillwave” this month. A genre I’m not always fond of. But people seem to be playing with it a lot and breaking rules, so there’s some interesting stuff you shouldn’t be so quick to categorize just yet. Give it all a chance and I bet after a few listens you’ll find yourself coming back to a LOT of these tracks as I have. I like lo-fi stuff a lot. But some artists have taken it way too far and in my opinion, when it sounds like crap.. sometimes it JUST sounds like crap. You have to attack lo-fi with material that elevates itself above the low production value or you just end up with a non-catchy, un-hummable, noisy, muddy mess with zero value. Luckily, there’s not much of that here this month. As a matter of fact, I need a new MP3 player with more space because of this month and last month. A lot of stuff I just cannot bring myself to delete and replace with new tracks. And unless you have one of those iPods with practically unlimited storage, I’m sure you know exactly what I mean.

Enough jibber-jabber.

You can find the NewMusicPlaylist Indie 69 July 2010 HERE and at all the usual haunts.

Stay cool and I’ll see you in.. ohcrap… AUGUST already? Make the summer last. It feels like a short one. (TWSS)

P.S. – If you’ve found the chatroom and it’s sadly empty, that’s because I have had NO time for chatting. I’m sure that will change at some point. But not right away. Sorry about that. Go there, stick around and maybe others will show up if you actually wait around for the next person to do what you did. I know people are looking for it and using it a lot because “indie music chatroom” is oddly one of the top searches that lead to this blog. But I think they are ALL popping in for 1 minute and not sticking around. Stick around and wait for the next person. Or don’t. But either way, it’s still there. I’m not.

.

*Does it have something to do with PL being used in Perl scripting? PL is a filename extension. Is it a security measure/error? Hard to say. And I don’t have time to go there and beg for an answer.

The Playlist is running a bit late. (again)

July 2, 2010 3 comments

The playlist will be a day or two late. Just a bit behind, but the wait will be worth it. Really good stuff this month. Very diverse.

While you wait, last month’s was great, too. And not really downloaded as much as previous months. Probably due to my “musiaylist” flub. But check back a few blog posts for a link. It’s there just waiting for you to grab it.

The playlist for July will be ready either this evening (late) or some time tomorrow.

Cheers.

Indie 69 June 2010 Playlist Released

Indie 69 June 2010 Cover Art

Indie 69 June 2010 Cover Art

Sorry for being so late this month. The extra time I set aside for it was probably worth it.

Due to a very personal near-tragedy, this month’s playlist almost didn’t happen. I remember a time when I swear it almost felt like each opportunity I was presented with to be a flake was greeted by me with near-enthusiasm. Even when it came to things I loved. But those days are long gone. I’m certainly no “Mr Responsibility”, not by a long shot. But I have changed in these last 5 years or so. Everything seems immediate, important, vital. When you almost lose someone you care about and love, things come into focus or you shut down.  I guess in a way I’m lucky I haven’t been taking the latter road. Time will tell.

I didn’t have as much time to focus this month, which could either be good (randomized, less focused or predictable) or bad (dupes, too much focus). It’s hard for me to tell. I just try to make it as diverse as possible and trust my ears as your ears by proxy. In other words, instead of only adding things  “I” would like, I listen for quality, originality and diversity. And a few that I’d like, too.

New this month, finally, are Zune HD wallpapers. I’m sure there are not very many of you out there with Zunes, but if you do have one I hope you like ’em. I still have no idea if the iPod or other players use the “wallpaper” thing at all. I know my old gigantic Creative player didn’t. There’s not much else that’s new other than the music. And again if there are any dupes please forgive me this month. I just didn’t have as much time. That said, there are some GREAT new tracks this month. And I have something so amazing right now, sitting right in front of me in the form of an advance CD, that I’ve promised not to share until the time is right. And it is KILLING me. It’s so good. Won’t be long now. Album of my summer and probably will be for a lot of you as well. You’re gonna love it.

Enjoy the music and look out for my monthly Playlist Roundup to catch all the other playlists coming out this month, all in one place.

And remember, if you don’t want to have 5 copies of the same new song that was added to ALL the playlists in a particular month, use uTorrent (I’m sure other clients allow this, too). When you start to download and that first screen pops up you can de-select songs you don’t want to grab. Just un-check them. Of course it’s always helpful if you seed the whole thing, but being selective can save disk space and time. I get it.  🙂

You can grab the Indie69 June 2010 New Music Playlist HERE.

FUNNY : When I uploaded, I double checked the name so something is going all funny at TPB. Then when I tried to edit, it saves and it’s exactly the same when I re-check it.

I’ve been through this kind of thing before and when you delete and try to re-up it’ll tell you it “already exists in the database” and won’t let you upload. So for now, until it lets me edit and actually change it, the name of the torrent is:

Indie69 June 2010 New Musiaylist (LOL!!)

…and in all the usual places. Enjoy, seed, share, go see the shows.. go buy the CDs or the downloads if you love what you hear. And tell everyone you know about the playlists and the artists. Spread the word. See you here in the blog and in July for the next playlist. I still have thousands of words to publish and I’m never satisfied, so I’ll be “letting go” of these posts that I keep re-scheduling and re-editing as the month goes on.  And if anything happens to me that would deny me access to the Internet for any extended period… this blog would just keep on publishing without me for quite a long time. Thank you, WordPress scheduling.
