Indie Rock Playlist Database (new site/service)

April 11, 2011 3 comments

Old school database

Old school database

I discovered this service/site when its creator, Javier Fernandez, e-mailed me for permission to include my playlists in his database. I of course said yes and was immediately curious about the whole thing. Well, it turns out it’s a great service. If you’re looking for a song based on title or artist or even just want to see what was on the playlists in a particular month or year, this could be a convenient way of doing it. And the potential is there for it to become even more. It’s also nice in the sense that this is another sign of these playlist things becoming more like a larger community, with associated and related services, aggregators and forums (which BIRP is the best at IMHO, great site).

Check the database out HERE and try a search.

I’d been meaning to write about this for a while but somehow set it aside and forgot to get back to it.

Currently the database uses Criznittle’s original Indie Rock Playlist, BIRP, Jimdo, The IndieRockPlaylists.com site, Indie69, last.fm and myspace, although I’m not sure how the database uses data from last.fm or myspace. Perhaps this is a future addition or feature. Hopefully the site will eventually include Samy’s, Cut The Crap, SaG’s, Shankly and PlayIndie. The database interface is simple, clean and to the point. No bells and whistles. I like that, a lot. I can just imagine how useful something like this would be if it could also get an unlimited “firehose” of data from a site like Hypem. Wondrous! Or perhaps even bypass the use of another aggregator/curator like Hypem and just seek out the direct rss feeds of particular blogs that feature artist and label submitted promotional tracks. You could have the future of free legal music search encompassing the best of both music blog curation and the playlist community. The database could be useful to artists as well, as a way to track their exposure.

The only bug I noticed was with bands that have “and” in their names, which is quite a few. If you use the word “and” , some bands won’t show up.  Eliminate the “and” part of the band name and they DO show up, with some of them using “&” instead of “and”. (*another reason why I avoid using characters like “&” in filenames) Once you have results you can sort them by artist, song title, file size, length of the track, the month of the playlist, the year and the playlist (IRP, BIRP, Jimdo, etc etc). This is a great service to both music fans and the playlist community, and I hope Javier continues to work on it in the future. Fantastic work. It’s even available en Espanol !

* I have come under fire for my “weird” file naming structure in the past, but this is just another example of why I’m right and this criticism is based on a lack of understanding. (OOOH, arrogance!!)The way I name files is standard based on being the most compatible with things such as databases, alternative operating systems and file systems.  But the way I do it balances between being human-readable and machine-readable quite nicely. I certainly didn’t come up with it myself. This is why I avoid empty spaces/special characters. The rest is just logical. The dash represents a division in the file name clearly pointing out when the band name stops and the song name begins. The underscores are used because using a dash would be confusing. Duh. 😉  And seeing as how many don’t even include the name of the band in the filenames when they create mp3s lately (hrmph) , my way is at least an improvement in that regard. Having learned to use computers on a machine that was not running windows, (not linux) a filename with empty spaces within it seems alien to me and always will. Endrant.

Indie and New Music Playlist Round-Up – September 2010

September 14, 2010 3 comments

I figure… as long as I get this done before the 15th, it’s not late. So, depending on when you see this, it is or is not “late”. Either way, I’ve had a chance to listen to a couple of these and it IS a good month. Just wish I had time to grab them all. Looks like Criznittle is sitting September out. We miss ya. Remember, when I find new playlists, I add them to the list for the month. So check back here often for updates. Here’s the rest….

BIRP Sept 2010 cover art.Is that not the best cover? Pure awesome. Click on it to see it animate! TrippyCat iz in your headz, makin’ your trips! I can has acid? It’s a great selection this month. Check it all out. HERE.

Cut the Crap Cover artCut the Crap is back. Let the Crap be Cut!! Good to hear this one. The name fits, really. It seems like time and effort are put into these to get a certain quality and selection. And you will find tracks here that none of the other playlists have. It’s a different take on things. Refreshing. I know it says August, but it really came out in Sept. So have at it all HERE.

Jimdo's Indie Rock Music September 2010 cover artJimdo’s playlists are always great and this is no exception. You know, this is really dull sometimes, having nothing negative to say. The truth is, I just love all the lists and get a gigantic kick out of hearing SO MUCH new music all the time. And it would be hard for one of these playlists to go terribly wrong. But I SWEAR.. this one. … this Jimdo’s playlist is special. Yes, if you download all of them, you will get some repeats. But that’s not exactly hard to fix. It’s worth it. Grabster HERE.

SAG's Indie Electro Rock Playlist September 2010 cover art. Here we have a stated and very real difference. There’s a lot more bleep-bloop here. That’s not a bad thing. And there are some GREAT bleepin’ bloopin’ tracks out this month. Don’t let anyone tell you that this music cannot “rock”. Oh it can. And will. Bleep it bleepin’ HERE (link to multiupload on indierockplaylists.com). Really needs to be a torrent of this every month.

Indie 69 September 2010 Cover art.Alright. What’s the deal with the name? There have been over 100 tracks for 2 months running now. So it’s not that there are 69 tracks. Is this guy some kind of perv or something? I mean, WTF!? Is that some kind of a joke? SixtyNine! Oooh, how original. I bet he thought that’d get some attention, huh? Jeeze. And then with the cover art? What is that? A Doctor Who font? Nerrrrrrrrd!!!! lol. I cannot believe this guy still thinks anyone cares what he thinks is good on a given month in music. But he just keeeeeps doing it. Over and OVER and OVER. I guess if you like that sort of thing it’s worth grabbing this month. I guess it’s good for…. completists? That’s about it, really. Stop encouraging him. If you MUST.. grab it HERE.

That’s it for this month. I hope this list comes in handy for everyone. Also, there’s a new site out there you may have seen mentioned in the comments called IndieRockPlaylists.com . It’s well maintained, easy on the eyes and the person doing it is pretty darned cool. So check it out. You may find it a more convenient place to grab everything. And there are tons of artist links on the lists. Nice touch. But.. umm.. come back here anyway! lol. See you next month and in the blog. I promised higher volume of posts and I am delivering. So check back often.

Indie and New Music Playlist Round-Up for August 2010

August 17, 2010 15 comments

I decided to put this one together a little earlier this time. Apologies for the premature posting(this was posted accidentally a few days ago before it was finished.. a case of a mistake in scheduling). It’s never happened to me before, I swear. It’s just that.. well.. we just met and you’re so beautiful and I just… couldn’t control myself. I swear, next time it will be different. wait… what??

Last month it was FAR too late. Be sure to come back and check this post from time to time as I will edit it to add any new playlists I’ve come across. Please leave any suggestions for anything I’ve missed or messed up in the comments. And remember, if you’re interested in making your own.. just do it! And then let me know where it can be found. I’m sure your tastes are better than mine at least. Prove it!! 🙂

As always we will start off with the original, the one and only..

DAMN! No Criznittle playlist this month. Someone mentioned he was taking a couple (few?) months off for some reason. But I cannot find a post mentioning it or mentioning why. So I guess we’ll be losing the great one again for a little bit. But at least we know he’ll be back!

.

Blalock's Indie Rock Playlist August 2010 Blalock’s Indie Rock Playlist – August 2010 – A great one for August. And I like now that on his site you can vote on tracks and there’s a top 10 for the month. Nice!

Sadly, I am also not seeing an August, 2010 SAG Indie Electro Rock Playlist. I checked last.fm and found no evidence as to why. If I find out what’s up I’ll update this post with more info.

Navigator's Fresh Indie Playlist August 2010 Navigator’s Fresh Indie Playlist – August 2010 – Just came out yesterday, so it’s not quite seeded yet. Matter of fact, as of writing this there were no seeds at 100%. (all are at 45.8 percent at the moment) That may change in the next few hours, so this might be one you just want to let sit and wait for it to complete. It could be a while before the uploader notices that he or she isn’t actually seeding for whatever reason. (uh-oh… ISO Hunt lists it as being “censored” by a US court) Hrm. Looks like someone in the industry is learning to stab itself in the back. We’ll see how this plays out. More than one site is citing a takedown notice as the reason for the torrent not being available anymore. If anyone out there has it from a rapidshare download or any other source.. you could, if you wanted to do such a thing and violate the takedown order… seed it. But I wouldn’t want to encourage that sort of thing of course. This is new. Could it be that this playlist seems to have featured quite a few more mainstream or major label tracks than usual? Disturbing. I guess the big boys want to “control the message” so to speak. They screwed up radio and now they want to screw up everything else so that the ONLY dominant culture is tied into all their other Disneyfied properties and competitive reality TV crap. GFY. (UPDATE:Now seeded well, but still no idea why there was a takedown on some sites)

Indie 69 August 2010 Indie 69 New Music Playlist – August 2010 – He’s at it again. But this time it’s gigantic(138 tracks). At least the music is good. Jeeze. Quit already.

Testimonials:

“He didn’t hurt anyone.. physically.”

“Who?”

“I tried to tell him to slow down a bit, but he kept doing it anyway. And he wonders why he needs glasses now. Heh.”

The Sonic Impetus

The Sonic Impetus – The Throwback Album – A one-shot playlist suggested by xy2610. A great little collection of tracks that are new, but inspire the sense of being in the past. A nice theme, good song choices and good writing on the blog itself.  I hope we see more from this person.

The Sonic Impetus playlist, August 2010The Sonic Impetus – August 2010 – The creator of the above also does a short but sweet monthly playlist, as it turns out. August does indeed suck ass. And this does make it better as predicted. Nice selection. I’ve never heard of a few of those. I like that. Time to catch up. Nice cover art, huh?

I noticed nothing new from the 2 new ones I found in July. Hope they come back. And no evidence (so far) of other new ones this month. If they do, or any of the others do, I will update this page. So check back from time to time or follow me on Twitter (@indie69) and I’ll send out a notice when it’s updated. This was a bit of a light month for playlists, huh? Hopefully it will improve over the course of the month.

Considering how few playlist releases there were this month, I may consider doing another double if I can dedicate the time at the end of the month (and in-between). If this sounds like a BAD idea, let me know. Most of the feedback so far is positive. Also, does anyone else see the blue sky theme in this month’s covers? Unintentional, of course. Strange and beautiful.

Indie and New Music Playlist Roundup July 2010 (second update)

July 20, 2010 7 comments

I was looking over the blog, sifting through the other playlists I finally got around to downloading yesterday and I thought to myself.. “something is.. missing..what could it be? Did I forget to post that 9000 word essay/rant that nobody will ever read? Yeah.. I flushed that into the world.. hmmm” and then it dawned on me.

OH CRAP!!!

The monthly playlist roundup is missing, that’s what! Well, here it is. Better late then never, as they say. And “they” have pretty low standards, really. From what I’ve gathered in the short time I’ve had to listen to a handful of these, it was another good month with a lot of great summer music. I know they’re “darlings” and all, but I’ve been listening to a lot of Neon Indian. Just feels right for summertime. And that new Get Up Kids is really an unexpected departure. Not sure if I *love* it yet, but it’s a strong like. I’d take it to meet the parents. But no shelf in the bathroom for toiletries yet.

So let it begin..so much new music that if you don’t find SOMETHING you like, you like nothing. Fact.

(EDIT: This has been updated twice now, with 2 playlists added. The amount of music out there is mind blowing. And the people putting these together are dedicated and loaded with taste. Keep it up, everyone!)

.

.

The Indie Rock Playlist July 2010 THE Indie Rock Playlist – July 2010 – Great collection as always and there’s a website now! Criznittle’s list is always a fantastic sampling of what’s new. Check out the site often. It’s pretty new and I imagine it will be updating and changing often now. You can download several tracks directly from the site as well as downloading all of them via torrent.

Indie (and new music) Playlist Roundup, June 2010

June 9, 2010 9 comments

Sorry, this thing is usually done a lot quicker, earlier in the month. But this month has been a doozy for me. So much so that I have not downloaded all of these as I usually do. Did you know, by the way, that the end of a sentence is not where a preposition should be AT? I didn’t. Still do not. For me, that’s still where it’s usually at.

NE-ways. Here’s the list of lists containing links to the playlists so you can download them and fill your players and computers with so much new music you will be compelled.. yes COMPELLED to spontaneously purchase at least 5 CDs and attend 3 shows. Much like the Men’s Warehouse, I guarantee it. Minus the guarantee part. And the part where I sound like I’m falling asleep recording the promo. Hmm. Might be a regional reference. (but you should do those things anyway)

Check out the great cover art this month, too. My fave is the BIRP cover. Paper party ribbons or something. Very nice.

How lucky are we to have SO much new music to sample every month? The more the merrier. Sure, we get dupes here and there. But there’s so much to choose from and so many discoveries to be made. SO lucky. This used to be so difficult. Finding that odd station on the left of the dial, listening through the hours of hippie-dippy-hour DJs to get to that one guy in the middle of the night with his finger to the pulse of the new music world. And then sometimes missing the back-announce, never to find out who did that one song that had the thing in it that sounded like the gods having an orgy in a sand-pit with their feet on fire and then went SHOOOM – Bashow!! Yeah, the “good” old days. …. are.. over. Finally. But I miss you, radio. I really do. More on that later. For now… THE LISTS!

(Disclaimer: I visit these torrent sites using NoScript, allowing only stuff required to use the site and no more. You should do the same. If any of them do anything nasty, I’d never know because I remain protected and vigilant. So proceed with caution when using any site you’re not familiar with. Train your noscript patiently and carefully, only allowing necessary scripts)

.

Indie Rock Playlist (Criznittle's)Indie Rock Playlist(Criznittle)June, 2010 –  Have not downloaded it, but grabbed the torrent file. The list of songs looks like another great one.  As always, if you can only get one, this is it. Always great, diverse and inclusive of the near-mainstream to the obscure. The original. The one. The NEO of playlists. But without that kinda sucky third movie.

Cut The Crap Playlist cover art, May 2010Cut the Crap: Link to TPB profile in case he changes his mind – as of June, 2010 according to this blog (CAUTION:BIEBERBLOG lol), the Cut the Crap playlists will no longer be torrented. They will be distributed via Zip file. If you keep up with the blog, you’ll be able to find the links there from now on. The blog also has an awesome music submission page using google docs. Too bad this one is no longer going to be on the torrents. But at least it’s still around, which is good because this one tends to be very different than the others.  Still no June playlist though, as of today. You can find the May 2010 one here. (EDIT: The reason there’s no June playlist is because he releases his playlist at the END of the month, not the beginning. So that explains that. This one (May) is the most recent.)

.

.

.

.

.

.

Joydue’s Indie Rock PlaylistJune, 2010 –  (cannot find cover art) Another playlist that tends to be very different from the others.  A lot of stuff I’ve never heard of. Catch up time. Tried to find the cover art, but it’s not in the torrent and the blog appears to be invite-only. On purpose? Not sure. But that’s how it is right now. Invite only.

.

Navigator's Indie Rock Playlist June, 2010 cover art.Navigator’s Fresh!!! Indie Playlist June, 2010 – Have not tried this one, new to me. Even though Google reveals it was on Mininova back in 2009. Not sure how I missed it. Don’t know much about it other than the tracklist, which looks interesting. It leans a bit toward what you’d probably hear on the few “alternative” stations still around for some of the tracks, direct indie tracks for the rest. Leans on the rock side of things it seems. Which isn’t a bad thing, since the others don’t focus on that as much as a whole. So this is good. Grab it.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Dakradha/Samy/Snipe The Hype – Nothing this month, but watch here for the next edition(s). I really love the fact that these two are working together now, even if it means we won’t get a PL as often.

.

Indie 69 June 2010 Cover ArtIndie69 New Musiaylist June, 2010 –  That’s right. Musiaylist. A new word. (curiously similar to “New Music Playlist”) Invented by TPB’s recent habit of removing random characters from torrent names when their captchas fail more than 3 times. ARGH! I mean, I love the site, no denying it.. but WTF??!! And no way to fix it without abandoning the torrent and starting over. Let this be a lesson for me (and anyone else), pay attention to the torrent name after the captcha fails more than once. Chances are, something is going away when you’re not looking in the right place at the right time. FAILICIOUS! I’m hungry for hearts of facepalm!

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

That’s it for June. Dakradha and Samy are missed, to be sure. Criznittle is still back (yay) and there’s a few new faces on the block. If you find or know of other playlists, comment please and I’ll edit them in/eventually try them. Have a great June and I’ll blog in-between about Internets stuff up until July, which is already stacking up to be a GREAT month for new music of all kinds. Keep the true indie spirit alive as these people have. And make your own playlists, then share them. But most of all.. and this is VERY important…

SEED. El Seed, senor. And keep the bittorrent angle alive. Don’t be a slave to bandwidth that can be controlled, stopped, inspected, scrutinized or manipulated in any way by others. Bittorrent will free us all. Direct download alternatives are great. Wonderful. Perfect. BUT.. try to stay in the bittorrent world at the same time.  It can be frustrating, but it’s so worth it.  They say in space no-one can hear you scream. In bittorrent, no-one can hear you DMCA. No matter HOW much that metaphor sucks.

and it does.

Love ya all, have a great “rest of June”.

Indie Playlist Roundup – May 2010

May 4, 2010 6 comments

Another month and we still have our beloved Criznittle back! And two playlist people have even started working together, Samy and Dakradha, making an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.  Nice job, folks! Looking forward to downloading it and listening. You should too. There may be some small overlaps, dupes, etc. But there’s also a LOT of diversity in this month’s playlist offerings. So let’s get to the links.

Indie Rock Playlist May 2010 Cover art. Criznittle’s Indie Rock Playlist (or simply THE Indie Rock Playlist)May, 2010 – Another great month with a lot to choose from. 120 tracks. I still don’t know how he does it. I spend a huge amount of time every month seeking out new music, and this guy always manages to find a TON of stuff I’ve never heard. And within those tracks, always a few that are real stand-outs, remaining on my player permanently. If you only grab one, this is it.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Blalocks Indie Rock Playlist May 2010 Cover Art Blalock’s Indie Rock Playlist May, 2010 – 125 tracks of new music goodness. This month marks the 1 year anniversary of his fantastic site, BlalocksIRP.com . A great community for equally great people with outstanding taste in music and even a community playlist. He’s added a Mixtape section on the site this month to celebrate and anyone can participate.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Snipe the Hype Vol 1 Cover art. daKradha AND SamySnipe the Hype Vol 1 – Two playlist people joined together to bring you what they describe as  “artists that are mostly rather unknown or deserve more attention, deserve to be heard, to be observed by you and we want, through this medium, provide you that possibility” It’s a brand new project for them and I’m really looking forward to hearing it all. Some of the tracks are not new, but I bet they’ll be new to my ears and probably yours. And that’s what counts. It just came out today, so get it and seed it. I hope this remains a monthly thing.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Joydue’s Indie Rock PlaylistMay, 2010 – Joydue is from Brazil, and that means we get the chance to hear music from there that we wouldn’t normally get a chance to hear. But that’s not all, he also includes tracks from all over. And I’m always satisfied with the mix of styles and sounds. Joydue was missed in April due to some computer issues, but he’s back now with 47 tracks.  It’s a smaller playlist than some of the others, which makes it great for a quick download and a shot at hearing stuff that isn’t even covered in the indie “blogosphere” mainstream.

.

Indie 69 May 2010 Cover Art Indie69May, 2010 – 69 tracks. Who is this guy? 69 tracks? What’s with that? Is that some kind of pervy thing, that number? Why that number? Suspicious.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

NE-ways.. see you in a couple of days for more rantings and ravings as always. Enjoy all the music, have fun and most of all support the artists by buying CDs, downloads , merch and going to their shows. Thanks for reading and HUGE thanks to all the playlist people. You keep opening ears and bringing happiness to people through music. It’s a wonderful thing you do. Except that one guy… seems like a perv.

Indie Playlist Roundup April 2010

April 2, 2010 Leave a comment

Here are all the playlists, so far, for April. Links almost all go directly to torrent listings, but some are searches or user pages if their playlist has not come out yet as of this post.

If you’re looking for a great, diverse collection of new music, you’ve come to the right place. Grab them all, delete what you don’t like and you’ll be setting off on a journey of discovery. Or something. In the end, you’ll have a buttload of new music. Remember, if you like it, grab a CD from the artist at your local real, independent  CD store (if you have one) or pay for a download of their album. And see them live!

Indie/Rock Playlist April 2010 – this is Criznittle’s return. The original. The first. The best. And it’s a great selection to come back with.(torrentreactor link)

Blalock’s Indie Rock Playlist April 2010 – Great one this month. Also runs BIRP, the best community for this playlist thing AND home of the community playlist.

Dakradha’s Indie Rock Playlist April 2010 – Not out yet, but says it’s coming. Link is to his page on TPB. Check that page once in a while, it should be out soon.

Joydue’s Indie Rock Playlist April 2010 – This is another good one you might not have heard of before. Sometimes posts more than 1 song from a single artist. Smaller playlist than the others(about 46 tracks), so faster to download usually. Nice alternative. (UPDATE: This torrent simply went away, still not sure why. The others are there. Will update with info when I get it)

Indie69 Indie Rock Pop Playlist April 2010 – Some guy(?) with a playlist. Delusions of grandeur, thinks he’s special. Is not. Don’t bother. It’s a mess. Mixes old Journey and Foreigner with Coldplay , Nickleback and new age music. Tries to pass it off as new. FAIL! Probably is old lady working for the RIAA.

Those are the monthly playlists that are staying current. There are others, I’m sure. And someone named Samy (a friend of Dakradha’s) makes a nice seasonal one with a lot of great tracks not on other playlists.

I’ve always said I think the more of these we have, the better.

This post will self-destruct in a few weeks, probably, in case someone in the biz thinks this is doing bad things to music instead of what it’s really doing.. the best promotion of music since the early days of  MTV.
